Without NJEA and its local affiliates, public school employees are left with only what is provided by statute. The rest of the terms and conditions of employment are then left to the board of education, and the employee must stand alone, without the protections of NJEA membership.
“By statute, school employees are entitled to”:
- Tenure for teaching staff members, secretaries/clerks, certain custodial/maintenance staff, city attendance officers and college faculty.
- Sick days.
- Minimum wage.
- NJEA Convention.
- Family and Medical Leave Act / New Jersey Family Act.
- Mileage rate.
